Our people need to reflect the world we’re building for
Our approach to diversity is centered on people, based on research, and creates an organization that reflects the world we live in, and the entrepreneurs we build for.
Supporting the business
Our work is rooted in our global diversity and belonging strategy, created after consulting 250 employees in 13 countries around the world. For more data and information about the diversity of Shopify internally, you can read our Sustainability Reports.
We want all employees to feel like they belong at Shopify, so we need to understand what belonging means to them. Through human-centered research, we created a common definition of belonging at Shopify, and then measured it across our teams. This gave our leaders the tools and support needed to intentionally foster inclusive team cultures.
Diversity and belonging action plans
Partnering with teams across Shopify, we build action plans that weave diversity and belonging best practices into team processes and projects. Whether designing learning offerings, providing strategic advice, or consulting on team-specific issues, we work across the business and around the world to bring Shopify’s commitment to diversity and belonging to life in direct, immediate ways.
Learning and development is a core part of our diversity and belonging programming. We create self-directed learning pathways on anti-bias, discrimination and microaggressions, empathy and allyship for all employees. Anti-bias training was delivered to senior leaders, and initially tested in our European and APAC offices before expanding to all Shopify employees (Shopifolk) worldwide. The feedback has been promising, with 100% of Shopifolk who participated saying they would apply their learnings within three months.
Creating and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment is an ongoing, intentional process that helps us attract, hire, and develop the best talent.
Employee resource groups
Engaging over 1,800 Shopifolk globally, Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) at Shopify have grown to represent employees who are Asian, Black, Indigenous, Latinx, LGBTQ+, people with disabilities, and women. ERGs act as a voice for employees, focusing on professional development, talent acquisition, as well as employee engagement and retention.
Belonging connectors program
One of the ways we foster belonging at Shopify is through our Belonging Connectors Program, a collective of trained volunteers who help us build a future of commerce that includes more voices. Connectors act as a confidential sounding board for employees facing diversity challenges, opportunities, or questions, as well as championing initiatives throughout the company.
Tackling subjects like mental health and isolation, the diaspora experience, and the crisis of anti-Black racism is the goal of Real Talk. Shopify employees from underrepresented groups and allies share a better understanding of the issues, within a safe and respectful environment.
Addressing our systems
Leveraging diverse teams will allow us to make the thoughtful decisions needed to make commerce better for everyone.
Diversity tools and resources
We have developed a range of internal tools and resources to ensure that our systems are bias-free and inclusive, including materials on identifying and eliminating bias in hiring, performance and compensation decisions and on diversity and belonging considerations in content creation.
To be more competitive, inclusive, and fair, we've taken a global approach to reviewing our compensation, perks, and benefits programs, as well as the decision-making process that determines these outcomes. We aim to go above and beyond the industry standard with an approach that considers both the compensation outcomes and manages biases that may be present in the decision making that impacts the outcome.
Talent process audit
Auditing our hiring processes ensures our commitment to diversity and belonging and results in welcoming more underrepresented groups at Shopify. This detailed audit reviewed our written processes and their implementation while also making recommendations to eliminate bias and foster more diversity and belonging at Shopify.
