5 Reasons Ecommerce Product Videos Will Increase Sales


If your online store isn't using video, you're missing out on sales. In this post I'm going to give you 5 reasons ecommerce product videos will help you sell more.   

Video is becoming insanely popular. In August, 85% of American Internet users viewed online video. That resulted in a record breaking 6.9 billion viewing sessions, according to comScore's most recent report. Video has evolved into a powerful marketing tool that online retailers would be insane to ignore. Here are 5 things to consider: 

1. Google Likes Video

Research shows that Google structures its search results to prioritize sites with video. Furtermore, because Google displays "blended search" results (a mix of video, image, news, maps, and other mediums in addition to regular search results), if you optimize your videos properly they'll have a better chance of ranking well. Here are 2 easy ways to get your video to rank higher in Google: 

  1. YouTube is owned by Google, so it's no surprise that most videos that rank well are hosted on YouTube. Host your video on YouTube and embed it on your site. For extra points, put your video on a page that has relevant keyword-rich text. 
  2. Use keywords in your video filename, title, description, and tags. 

2. People Share Video

Studies show that people are more likely to share videos over boring old text pages. Here at Shopify we've noticed that the videos we share on our company Facebook page often garner more attention than regular text posts. People are more inclined to click on a video thumbnail than something with no visual or multimedia element. To sweeten the deal, when people "like" or "share" a video link on Facebook, it automatically pops up on their wall for all to see. Bonus! Lastly, YouTube makes it really easy for other people to embed your video on their site. 

3. You Can Captivate the Lazy

It doesn't take a lot of brain power to watch a video, but to read an article... well, that's a different story. Simply put, video is easier to digest. If you've ever wasted hours in front of the TV or playing on YouTube you know exactly what I'm talking about. Video allows you to engage an audience that may dismiss the information you'd otherwise convey through text. 

4. If a Picture = 1,000 Words...

A video is worth 1,000,000!!! Well maybe not a million, but video does have the ability to convey a ton of information in a short period of time. Having a video that displays your product will give your customer way more information about what your product looks like, and even strike an emotional cord and subconsciously tell them how they should feel about the item. 

5. Adds a Personal Touch

There's a lot of shoppers looking for that "boutique" experience. You know, something with a personal touch. Video is a great way to add some personalization to your online store. Walk into a good brick-and-mortar store and you'll likely receive a warm greeting followed by personalized recommendations and help (if needed). Use video to replicate this experience! Even if it's just a quick greeting video on your blog, or perhaps a behind the scenes look at how something is made, you'll be amazed how loyal customers can be if they see a face behind the company.

    The response from customers has already been very positive.

    Does Shopify have a feature that enables its users to upload video directly to a product page in the same manner that images are uploaded?

    No we don’t have that feature, but you don’t really want that anyway. Studies show it’s better to embed a YouTube video (which is easy to do w/ Shopify) into your page.

    Remember, YouTube is the second biggest search engine in the world (after Google), but YouTube only displays results from it’s system. So if you’re not hosting your ecommerce videos on YouTube, you’re losing 100% of the 2nd biggest search engines traffic.

    hey mark at holstee we def agree and have seen great feedback to our videos. sort of along the lines of claire, would love to see better integration of videos. on the product page where we upload a photo would be great if there was also a place to upload video then in the theme we could have a special placeholder for the video. when empty it just wouldnt show and when there is a video it would shift the content for example if there was a video for a product i would put above the images rather than with the product description.

    Hi, just to reiterate this – the ability to insert a ‘product’ specific video would be great. I’m currently in the middle of trying to find a solution to this as the client needs this feature in much the same way as Dave outlines above. The video needs to be inserted into each product page above the image / description.

    Thanks for the carrot, but this article is outright Odd given that there is no way to easily embed, upload, or include a product specific video on Shopify even when using the suggested services, which do all the work. All that would be required is a simple text blob in our product tables allowing the embed code to be pasted in. Shoot, even a quick-n-dirty {% raw %} embed would be more useful than nothing…. but…. alas eh?

    +50 for followup on this issue. You’re right, it’s useful, it’s valuable and it’s completely impractical to implement on shopify. (though I do love the shopify platform over all!)

    In fairness, I failed to consider or give credit for the little ‘insert video’ button when editing a product’s text description. It may not be perfect, but it’s quite usable for a youtube embed. The inline-image-thumbnail method discussed in these comments would be a fantastic improvement, but I’m pleased to have embeds available. Thank you shopify!

    Has anyone found a solution to this? Can anyone recommend a theme that has this inbuilt? I’m looking for a solution that will allow me to embed my Youtube videos on a product page.

    My product description in centred so if I insert a video here it cuts in the right hand column.

    I couldn’t agree more with you on this. I work with agencies and freelancers all the time on Shopify sites – I produce a lot of e-commerce videos for them. Comscore also said that ‘96% of online shoppers watch online video.’ – 96%! That is a crazy figure. In my opinion, if you don’t have video on your e-commerce site now, then maybe it is time to rethink your strategy a bit.
