About the role
Shopify is now permanently remote and working towards a future that is digital by default. Learn more about what this can mean for you.
At Shopify, we build products that help entrepreneurs around the world start and grow their business. We’re the world’s fastest growing commerce platform with over 1 million merchants in more than 175 different countries, with solutions from point-of-sale and online commerce to financial, shipping logistics and marketing.
Data is a crucial part of Shopify’s mission to make commerce better for everyone. We organize and interpret petabytes of data to provide solutions for our merchants and stakeholders across the organization. From pipelines and schema design to machine learning products and decision support, data science at Shopify is a diverse role with many opportunities to positively impact our success. The Data Science & Engineering team acts as the impact multiplier for Shopify’s product teams, putting over 11 petabytes of data to work to make our merchants more successful. From delivering merchandising insights, to optimizing shipping and processing rates, to reducing credit card fraud, to ad campaign recommendations - our Data Scientists deliver solutions from pipeline to platform via an array of open source tools
A key element to helping Shopify grow and scale for years to come is to use the unprecedented amount of data available to make smart marketing investments. We are looking for a Data Science Manager to join our Marketing/Growth/Start Data Science team and help shape the insights and algorithms that will inform our marketing strategy as we grow globally. Our Marketing/Growth/Start Data Science teams model and manage marketing and user behavior data, analyze performance marketing and organic growth, and derive insights and spend optimizations across channels to balance effectiveness and efficiency, all across the customer acquisition and retention journey. These teams work on projects ranging from forecasting and conversion likelihoods prediction to potential churn classifiers and multi-touch attribution approaches, using techniques from machine learning, statistical modelling, and cloud data warehousing.
We’re looking for someone to manage a team of Data Scientists as we continue to expand our Marketing, Growth and Start teams. You’ll oversee a team managing multi-terabytes of marketing and digital data, working with our Marketing, Growth, and Start teams to guide better decisions around marketing choices, and leverage our data to improve marketing relevance. Our 3 teams have different focuses, and your role might wind up in any of them:
Marketing Data Science works across our marketing datasets, joining our Shopify owned and operated site behaviors to our marketing data to guide spend decisions, experimentation, and predictive approaches to improving our merchant acquisition and retention.
Growth Data Science looks at new opportunities and less common areas to uncover new growth options, and also looks to automate marketing tools and approaches to drive efficiencies.
Start Data Science focuses on the onboarding and early success of our merchants, looking for ways to optimize the first few weeks of a new merchant’s launch through experimentation and predictive analytics.
You will need to have experience with:
- Technical leadership and management experience (you enjoy doing both). You can jump into the code to the level that your direct reports admire and respect, but are also interested in developing people and capacity for your team
- Experience creating data product strategies, shipping data products, iterating after launch, and trying again
- Extensive experience using Python including a strong grasp of object oriented programming (OOP) fundamentals
- Strong ability to prioritize and communicate to technical and non-technical audiences alike
It would be great if you have:
- Previous experience using Spark (either via Scala or Pyspark)
- Experience with statistical methods like regression, GLMs or experiment design and analysis; Machine Learning or other advanced techniques are also welcome
- Exposure to Tableau, QlikView, Mode, Matplotlib, or similar data visualization tools
