Lead, Growth Monetization

About Shopify
Opportunity is not evenly distributed. Shopify puts independence within reach for anyone with a dream to start a business. We propel entrepreneurs and enterprises to scale the heights of their potential. Since 2006, we’ve grown to 10,000 employees and generated over $496 billion in sales for millions of merchants in 175 countries.
This is life-defining work that directly impacts people’s lives as much as it transforms your own. This is putting the power of the few in the hands of the many, is a future with more voices rather than fewer, and is creating more choices instead of an elite option.
About you
Moving at our pace brings a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity—and a little bit of chaos. Shopifolk thrive on that and are comfortable being uncomfortable. That means Shopify is not the right place for everyone.
- Care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone
- Excel by seeking professional and personal hypergrowth
- Keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)
- Be resilient and resourceful in face of ambiguity and thrive on (rather than endure) change
- Bring critical thought and opinion
- Embrace differences and disagreement to get shit done and move forward
- Work digital-first for your daily work
About the role
As of today, Shopify has over 3,000,000 merchants in 175+ countries using our software to set up and run their businesses across multiple sales channels, including: web, mobile, social media, marketplaces, brick-and-mortar locations, and pop-up shops. We are looking for an experienced strategist with product and marketing experience to lead initiatives in our monetization group.
This person will focus on Shopify’s plans, trials using them as strategic levers to drive revenue, deeper adoption of Shopify’s products, and merchant success. Shopify has a three-day free trial followed by $1 for the first few months, and a portfolio of six plans. There are huge opportunities to drive plan upgrades through additional trials and upsells, and to drive top-of-funnel by collaborating with our paid and SEO teams. You will work with product, finance, data science, paid marketers, and other teams to support and launch initiatives leveraging trials and plans.
WHAT YOU WILL BE WORKING ON
- Create a collection of monetization based product led growth strategies applicable to different parts of the Shopify product portfolio, especially focused on plans, but also on core features and Merchant Services
- Partner with product teams across Shopify to help define monetization strategies, both on a consultative basis, as well an embedded basis.
- Partner with finance to build forecasts for monetization initiatives, ensuring the models reflect correct business assumptions.
- Partner with Data Science and cross functional partners to design and conduct monetization based growth experiments, and thus measure incrementality and ROI for each strategy and use those results to build an enduring knowledge base of what kinds of monetization strategies work for which types of products and merchant contexts.
- Work closely with research teams to conduct quantitative and qualitative research, including easily digestible competitive intelligence.
- Collaborate with growth teams to ensure consistency of message and experience across various surfaces - website, blogs, email etc.
- Actively participate in discussions involving global market research, trends and opportunities, competitive landscape, business models and GTM strategies to assist in the development of business cases
- Do all of the above keeping in mind Shopify’s global context of merchants as well as globally distributed teammates working digitally by default.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Strategic experience in pricing, packaging, portfolio thinking is essential, either as a lead, or a key contributor; specifically with subscription models, usage based models, ala carte and bundling etc.
- Deep Experience with GTM/Product Marketing or Strategy consulting is important.
- Deep experience working with product management as well as marketing professionals is essential.
- Strong operations skills are essential. You will be juggling multiple processes and tasks. Project management skills paired with a high degree of organization will be key.
- Knowledge and experience with using product led growth tactics in several areas.
- Experience with managing business model changes and communications therein (with customers, cross functional stakeholders etc).
- Leadership and cross-functional collaboration skills are essential - especially collaborating with product, finance and engineering teams.
- Work history demonstrating initiation, execution, and most importantly concluding small and large scale projects is essential
- People leadership experience is useful but project leadership is even more important. If you care more about building great things rather than building giant teams, you might be a good fit.
- Knowledge of various testing and measurement methodologies - AB testing, DiD testing, quasi-experimental modeling, and other non experimental methods.
- Familiarity with performance marketing would be very helpful.
- You are creative, resourceful, detail-oriented, and highly organized
- You find fulfillment and alignment in Shopify’s merchant first approach to everything.
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS
- Undergrad background in economics or other quantitative fields would be very beneficial. An MBA with a focus on monetization, product or marketing strategy would be highly preferred
- Knowledge of international markets would be great, but having the ability to consider and conduct research on different geographies is essential
This role will be closing on October 3rd, 2023
The shape of a Shopify career
Ben joined Shopify as a frontline Support Advisor with no background in programming or computer science. He’s now a Director of Engineering. Spanning 10 jobs on 7 teams in 9 years, Ben’s Shopify career path has twisted and turned as he’s worked relentlessly to pursue a career as an engineer and adapted to the pace of change—all fuelled by personal and professional hypergrowth.
Our mission as a company is to spread entrepreneurship and help individuals become their own bosses and take control over their lives. I truly believe this mission and value in extreme personal growth and development extends to what’s expected as a Shopifolk. Shopify doesn’t like to tell people what to do. Not only is your career in your own hands, a lot of your day-to-day is too, which can be jarring for many people. To thrive here, you need to be someone who’s willing to take big bets on yourself and figure things out on your own.
