About the role

The Marketing Strategy and Operations team builds the foundation, provides direction and connectivity to drive optimum growth for the Revenue Marketing team at Shopify. The Planning and Operations group on the Strategy and Operations team ensures that the Marketing teams understand, contribute to, and stay aligned to the Revenue Missions and the Marketing priorities. We do this by setting the right foundations via planning and then identifying and enabling the right frameworks, rituals, and programs to enable our teams to focus on what they do best so that we can collectively meet and surpass our goals and targets.

As a Program Operations Lead you will focus on how we report on, operationalize, and improve on our key initiatives across Revenue Marketing.You will help our teams tell a compelling story around our  wins and their impact on business, and map those wins to our goals and objectives. You will get to work on critical problems and new working models that influence how we plan and prioritize our initiatives. You will also  provide program management support to priority initiatives by utilizing an agile working approach within the 6-week cycle model. Different programs require different solutions and it will be vital for you to be comfortable with both root cause identification as well as oversight of large scale programs in an agile and virtual environment. 

What you will be working on:

Reporting & Decision Support

  • Work with cross-functional teams including Finance, Marketing Tech Ops, Data Science, and team leads  to report  on Revenue Marketing initiatives on a 6 week, quarterly, and end-to-end program basis; this may include reporting on the status of major programs and initiatives shipped,  insights and lessons learned as well as wins and failures that we can all learn from

  • Tie your reports back to our goals and objectives  in a meaningful way that is digestible by different  stakeholder groups

  • Use storytelling so that the reports you create tell a story from one time period to another and that they resonate with different audiences from individual contributors to senior leadership

  • Continuously evolve the reporting approach by listening to the business and optimizing for maximum effectiveness

  • This work will entail working with finance to help capture the profitability of all programs, and tie those learnings back into operational improvements and work prioritization 

  • Help drive the annual investment planning process on an as needed basis

Operations:

  • Run & maintain program operations initiatives including work prioritization capture and planning

  • Map key initiatives to our goals and objectives, as well as departmental 6 week cycle trackers to support planning and reporting

  • Work with our enablement team so that they can create a calendar of all initiatives underway

  • Utilize data,  retrospectives, and lessons learned from each team to help uncover potential operational bottlenecks and opportunities for improvement 

  • Develop compelling, insightful recommendations where appropriate and create presentations to support those findings

  • Support the implementation of new processes 

  • Work with other members of our team to define, optimize, and distribute  shared practices

Program Management:

  • As needed, step in and provide program management support of large initiatives which may include significant problem and/or root cause analysis, coordinating requirements and plans with stakeholders across the organization, and end-to-end execution monitoring

  • Work with stakeholders to identify goals and success criteria for each initiative;  ensure that program plans and schedules are aligned with those requirements and success criteria; and to report back on progress and risks to appropriate stakeholder groups

  • Work in an agile manner: this means capturing all work and goals in 6 week cycles, encouraging early cross-functional planning before each cycle, and running frequent retrospectives to help drive ongoing improvements during execution

  • Where appropriate, provide recommendations on possible process optimization that achieves improved results

Qualifications

  • 7+ years experience in strategy, PMO, and/or management consulting

  • Familiarity with all aspects of marketing and its role in the broader context of delivering customer value 

  • Experience leading complex operational and strategic initiatives that span multiple geos and business areas

  • Demonstrated experience of problem-solving and analytical skills, including report creation and presentation skills

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and storytelling skills

  • Entrepreneurial mindset to deliver impact in ambiguous environments 

  • Ability to build high trust relationships with individuals and teams across the enterprise  and achieve buy-in

  • Hands on experience with different project management approaches, certifications are a bonus

  • Creative problem solving skills and the unique ability to stay calm and positive when things turn sideways.  Every day is different and we thrive on ambiguity.
