About the role

The Merchant Education and Community (MEC) Team in APAC aims to positively impact our existing Shopify Core and Plus merchants by providing hyper-local education and engagement opportunities that will help them connect with each other, grow and scale. Every interaction with our merchants is an opportunity to do more than answer questions; we create memorable experiences by adding value to their businesses. 

Shopify Japan’s vision of community is a place where people can learn about the whole spectrum of running a business; from store set-up to growing their business through marketing strategies. There are currently multiple Shopify communities across Japan and you will be working closely with the community organisers that manage these groups, to prepare events and content for these audiences.

You will be creating meaningful connections with entrepreneurs and business leaders in Japan through strategies such as digital and in-person 1:1s, 1:many educational events & engagement programs, relationship building with strategic partners & external organisations, and connecting with internal teams to execute on different projects and share ideas to better the platform. 

You have an infectious energy that inspires others, a persistent spirit and you thrive on impact. You will be joining an exciting new team in the APAC region, and will work with a high level of autonomy. 

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and host in person and digital events for business owners to help them: start their entrepreneurial journey with Shopify; replatform or upgrade their existing business; and grow their knowledge in marketing, automation, and everything related to running a successful business using Shopify Core or Plus

  • Help to increase product adoption from merchants who have participated in MEC programs

  • Engage with Shopify’s strategic partners and establish relationships with relevant business organisations in support of increasing merchant acquisition and driving merchant growth 

  • Act as a public-facing ambassador for the Shopify brand, by participating in networking activities / local events and maintaining an active presence in relevant social and digital communities

  • Develop creative assets and marketing content that scales merchant stories and supports key narratives in Japan

  • Develop and localise educational content, as well as provide constructive feedback to merchant education teams as to what material is most effective, and impactful

  • Test, iterate and learn with new engagement initiatives for Japan, that are aligned with the country go-to-market strategies

  • Continually assess the effectiveness and the impact of your regional initiatives against KPIs

  • Work closely with the APAC Merchant Success team to build a consistent feedback loop and build deeper, more connected and informed merchant relationships with Shopify Plus merchants

  • Collaborate with marketing colleagues in the APAC region and globally to drive forward the future of community, the definition of advocacy at Shopify, and the impact of MEC programs

Qualifications

  • A passion for entrepreneurship and small to medium business

  • An understanding of ecommerce best practices, as well as industry and marketing trends 

  • An established network and involvement in relevant business communities

  • Experience in community management, with the ability to grow and support digital communities 

  • Comfortable presenting in front of and facilitating large groups

  • Experience in event planning and execution 

  • Comfortable and practiced in using initiative to get projects done, especially with cross-team and time zone collaboration

  • Proficient in English and Japanese language 

Bonus points: 

  • You are currently, or have previously been a Shopify merchant, developer or partner 

  • Experience and expertise in business coaching, and are able to empathise with business owners and identify new growth opportunities
