Network Automation Specialist (Ottawa or Toronto)

About the role

In this role, you'll have to:

  • Collaborate and support a high impact team through various projects and day-to-day tasks

  • Be comfortable in a semi-permanent work-from-home environment

  • Update and maintain documentation related to network infrastructure and activities

  • Have knowledge of network protocols, services, standards, and their functionality

  • Have hands-on experience with hardware installation and configuration

  • Be comfortable configuring a variety of devices like switches, firewalls, and hypervisors

  • Contribute to the implementation and ongoing management of our infrastructure by planning, peer-reviewing, testing, troubleshooting, and automating changes

  • Create, test, and review automation scripts with Python, Bash, and Ansible

  • Maintain and troubleshoot Linux virtual machines with services, like DHCP, DNS, Syslog, and monitoring

  • Contribute and help maintain our codebase and documentation with Git and Github

  • Support Shopifolk by triaging and resolving tickets opened in our internal ticketing systems

  • Participate in an on-call rotation requiring a response to critical events 24/7, approximately every 3 months

Qualifications

It'd be great if you had experience with:

  • Working in a DevOps environment

  • MacOS systems in a large scale network

  • IP protocols and technologies such as IPv4, IPv6, TCP, UDP, STP, ECMP, VRRP, SNMP, etc

  • Maintaining Linux infrastructures services (BIND, isc-dhcp, rsyslog, Datadog, etc)

  • Familiarity with switching/routing infrastructure (Aruba, Juniper, pfSense, Arista, Fortinet, Opengear)

  • Layer 3 Routing protocols and technologies such as OSPF, BGP, VRF, etc

  • Stateful firewalls, non-stateful filtering, and packet inspection

  • REST APIs and serialized data structures (XML, JSON, YAML)

  • Network cabling and hardware racking standards and best practices

  • Giving direction to cabling contractors on projects

  • Monitoring and troubleshooting tools (Ping, traceroute, MTR, iperf, tcpdump, Wireshark, dig, Nmap, etc)

  • Configuration management tools like Ansible, Chef, Salt Stack, or Puppet

  • Virtualizing infrastructure with KVM

  • Automating devices with scripting languages

Shopify is designing a new workspace with three floors.  On average, there will be 100 devices on each floor that require wired and wireless connectivity.  Submit a network design for this new space that includes:

  1. A network diagram

  2. Hardware choices

  3. VLAN and subnetting information

  4. Explain how you would automate the configuration and management of these devices.  (For example with Python or Ansible.)
