About the role
[This isn’t a marketing or social media role. This is a design role in our R&D Org.]
You will be working with designers across Shopify to establish models and systems for content within the Money & Channels team. Some days you may wear the hat of an archaeologist, other days you will wear the hat of an architect.
You will work on things like:
Defining and implementing the information architecture
Improving navigation systems across Shopify admin
Using qualitative and quantitative research to inform our design strategy
Empowering designers and developers in Money & Channels to propose their own great content by contributing to training, learning resources, and other support opportunities
Collaborating closely with other content designers across Shopify by reviewing and critiquing your teammates’ work to help them grow
Learning design, development, and research tools and ways to communicate closely with your teammates
We expect Content Designers at Shopify to collaborate closely with all disciplines — designers, developers, researchers, and product managers — so that we design and build the clearest user interfaces. This position therefore requires deep understanding of the role language plays in the design process and an openness to cross-functional collaboration.
What we’re looking for:
We are looking for a senior practitioner with an understanding of design, information architecture, and user experience writing.
When we say senior, we mean your experience ideally includes:
Writing and structuring language to respond to audience needs
Demonstrated ability to create, implement, and maintain content standards/guidelines across an organization
A foundational understanding of user-centered design techniques and how to apply them
Empathy and advocacy for the design system community and their audiences, in all areas of our work
Content strategy experience. This experience could be from a product content or design system environment, but we’re also looking for candidates who are from different industries, like journalism, print, academia, or other industries where core content strategy skills are practiced.
Background working with different roles on a team. This could include UX designers, researchers, and engineers, but you don’t have to have a tech industry background to apply for this role. What matters is experience collaborating with people with diverse backgrounds and skill sets.
More concretely this means your skills must include:
Core content design skills that can be applied to a digital product, such as:
Search and wayfinding/navigation
The ability to communicate content concepts visually using design tools (for example: mocking up content models in Figma)
The ability to collaborate with other disciplines (like engineering and product management)
The ability to facilitate workshops to help with alignment on terminology
It’d also be nice if you had the following:
Editorial content structuring and copywriting
Documentation content structuring and copywriting
Voice and tone
Service design techniques
Figma and/or GitHub familiarity
At Shopify, we are committed to building and fostering an environment where our employees feel included, valued, and heard. Our belief is that a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion enables us to truly make commerce better for everyone. We strongly encourage applications from Indigenous people, racialized people, people with disabilities, people from gender and sexually diverse communities and/or people with intersectional identities.
