About the role

About the team

Shopify’s Talent Research and Insights (TRI) team provides insights to the right people, at the right time, to help them make great decisions quickly. By conducting primary qualitative research studies, our team surfaces and analyzes key information that helps us understand what employees need from us today, and anticipate what they’ll need from us in the future. We also work with our Talent partners to  communicate and operationalize the usage of employee data across Shopify.

About the role

We’re looking for a Senior Design Researcher to join our team. This is an opportunity to solve challenging problems that impact all employee groups at Shopify at all stages of their employee journey. In this role, you will work collaboratively and build iteratively with People Analytics, Talent Technology, and our wider Talent Research and Insights team. You’ll deliver world class experiences that make team monitoring and business tasks intuitive and manageable. You’ll also empower Shopify leaders and Talent teams to access and regularly make data-informed decisions.

Responsibilities:

  • Own employee experience (EX) projects from start to finish. You’ll lead various EX initiatives with stakeholders and project teams, including running design sprints to define and explore employee problems, content mapping, sketching, wireframing, low and high fidelity prototyping, usability testing, and leading stakeholder reviews

  • Partner with Employee Experience researchers and the broader Talent Research and Insights team to empathetically advocate  for our employees’ needs. This will involve conducting your own employee research, as well as pairing with others working in this space

  • Collaborate with different disciplines (EX researchers, people data scientists, Talent program managers) to drive design vision and strategy that meets the needs of our employees

  • Apply strategic thinking to visualize ideas and concepts and communicate them effectively to internal stakeholders, partners, and employees

  • Be a mentor to other teams in Talent - you’ll consider how to scale your expertise to provide more consultative services and feedback to your peers

  • Immerse yourself in Shopify context and the broader employee experience landscape outside of Shopify to identify key employee experience challenges and opportunities

  • Design for cross-discipline foundational systems by leveraging and incorporating the domain expertise of teams focused on specific employee workflows

Qualifications

  • A genuine excitement for solving employee problems and a strong sense of empathy for stakeholders and your peers

  • Ability to define and prioritize initiatives while working cross-functionally, and managing complex stakeholder relationships

  • A passion for solving product problems while balancing all facets of a user experience (strategy and research, information architecture, interaction design)

  • A deep understanding of the end-to-end iterative design process, including how to develop and use design research, job stories, journey mapping, content modelling, wire-framing, prototyping, user testing, and high-fidelity visuals to achieve human-centred design solutions

  • A history of thriving in broader, less defined roles and wearing many hats. You continuously "raise the bar" as an effective leader of positive change for the design and development process

  • Openness to working through ambiguity and embracing change. You are adept at quick context shifts, and see opportunities where others see challenges; we’re a rapid growth company that moves fast

  • Passion and curiosity for cultivating a positive employee experience, and the factors that help employees feel most engaged, connected, and impactful

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work across multiple projects, and align on goals and deliverables in a remote-first environment
