About the role

To join us on our mission, we are looking for an experienced, dynamic individual to help lead Corporate Communications at Shopify. Working cross-functionally, the ideal candidate will manage a range of topics relevant to our business including, but not limited to: executive communications, seasonal campaigns (e.g., Black Friday Cyber Monday), strategic partnerships, employer brand, sustainability commitments, quarterly earnings, corporate campaigns and feature storytelling, reputation management, social impact, and more.

Responsibilities

  • Be part of the corporate communications leadership team for North America while managing agency partners and collaborating with various stakeholders across product, international, executive offices, brand, legal, IR, etc.

  • Build Shopify's brand awareness as the champion for entrepreneurs everywhere through targeted storytelling opportunities

  • Set the vision and strategy for corporate communications while identifying unique opportunities and “white spaces” to share the impact Shopify has made on SMBs and commerce overall, further developing our position as the global industry leader 

  • Leverage strong media relationships and continuously deliver impactful storytelling across broadcast, print, and online outlets; experiment with new formats and mediums including podcasts, YouTube shows, Twitter Spaces, etc.

  • Devise communications strategies surrounding major company efforts and launches

  • Brief and prepare executives for media interviews, speaking engagements, and general thought leadership initiatives

  • Provide senior counsel and support as required for inbound media inquiries and issues

  • Collaborate with regional counterparts in EMEA and APAC to ensure effective rollout of global campaigns

Qualifications

  • Bold, creative, and strategic thinker with attention to detail – the ability to fly both high and low as needed and be nimble in approach. Willing and excited to think beyond the traditional and passionate about staying on top of news cycles, media trends, and of-the-moment conversations; open to questioning orthodoxy and willing to experiment with different, and sometimes unconventional, ways of sharing news

  • Strong experience crafting and executing thought leadership campaigns for C-Level executives, ideally at a public company 

  • Expertise in navigating and mitigating public-facing challenges

  • Understanding of global communications strategy development and roll-outs

  • Demonstrated impact in landing meaningful coverage and cultivating media relationships

  • Comprehensive understanding of the tech and business media landscape that is evolving beyond traditional national print and online outlets to include influencers, podcasts, vlogs, and much more

  • Strong writing, editing, speech and presentation skills are absolutely essential

  • Experience managing and growing a team

  • Solid understanding of how to value and measure PR and ability to translate that to high-level internal stakeholders

  • 12 -15+ years experience in PR, communications or a related field

It’d be great if you had experience with:

  • Leading PR, Communications or Media at a tech company

  • Working at management level at an agency with experience working with tech clients
