About the role

As a Staff Product Researcher, you will be a technical leader with a special role in building understanding and empathy for our merchants. You will help us build real connections with merchants, and bring these insights into product teams across Shopify. You will work with a multidisciplinary UX team of product managers, product designers, content designers, researchers, and developers to deliver the best possible experience for our merchants around the world.

Product Researchers guide and inform the company towards designing and building better products and experiences for people using a variety of research methods. Researchers work with teams to incorporate people-centric thinking from problem definition to post-launch iteration. We ask thoughtful research questions, conduct contextual research, frame problems, synthesize insights, evaluate concepts and prototypes, and assist with launches and releases.


Responsibilities

  • Own and lead research strategy and execution for a product team, collaborating closely with senior Product and UX leadership to inform strategic decision-making with evidence-based insights

  • Conduct descriptive, generative and foresight research, balancing long-term research to inform future direction with insights that teams can act on in the short-term

  • Collaborate with other Product Researchers to weave a compelling story through multiple problem domains and several sources of insights  

  • Partner with other insights disciplines (e.g. data science, market research) to align on a shared understanding of the biggest opportunities for your group

  • Distill findings into accurate, objective insights through robust analysis and synthesis

  • Continuously and iteratively share out insights, keeping team and stakeholders aware of research efforts, particularly when it comes to longer studies

  • Mentor other Product Researchers in levelling up the technical skills required to conduct high-leverage strategic research, and influence product direction through that research

  • Be part of our Research leadership team, identifying opportunities for levelling up craft skills across the discipline, through sharing work, workshops, talks, etc.

Qualifications

  • Deep understanding of a wide range of qualitative research methods, with expertise/specialization in specific ones

  • Expertise in selecting and applying a range of research methods with creativity, scrappiness, and critical thinking. Example research methods may include observations and in-depth interviewing, usability, strategic foresight or futures research

  • Strong communication skills; the ability to communicate research findings, insights, and recommendations clearly and effectively (both written and verbally) as well as the ability to tailor communication styles depending on audience

  • A deep understanding of the end-to-end iterative UX product design process
