About the role
About the team
Shopify’s Global Government Affairs Team, situated within the broader Legal Team, works with policymakers, civil society groups, academics, and policy influencers to speak up for small businesses and entrepreneurs, and advocate for a more free, open, and competitive ecommerce ecosystem.
The mission of the Government Affairs team is to prevent, manage, and mitigate political, legislative, and regulatory threats to Shopify and to promote a political, legislative, and regulatory environment that supports growth and innovation for entrepreneurs and small businesses.
About you
We are seeking a creative and proactive colleague to serve as a liaison and primary point of contact for all EU non-governmental policy stakeholders including, but not limited to nonprofits and civil society focused on tech policy issues, think tanks, academia and research groups.
This role will identify, establish, manage and maintain partnerships with third-party organizations on a day-to-day basis, with the objective of having those groups understand how Shopify is different and how we strive to support entrepreneurs to start, grow and thrive.
Responsibilities:
Identify the most important non-governmental third party groups that are influential on key policy issues for Shopify, including entrepreneurship, platform regulation, intellectual property, data protection, content moderation, competition, and ecommerce regulation.
Build and cultivate relationships with non-governmental third party organizations where success is defined by ensuring each partner understands and supports Shopify’s business model and how we only succeed if our merchants succeed.
Manage and serve as a primary liaison between Shopify and non-governmental third-party organizations in the EU.
Assist in the production of informational materials about Shopify, our merchants, and policies to support entrepreneurship for key public policy audiences.
Think of creative ways to continuously engage third-party groups in order to build strong allies.
Qualifications
You are located in or around Brussels, Belgium.
Demonstrated knowledge of the political and/or advocacy ecosystem.
Experience in a political campaign and/or managing policy partnerships, working with or for nonprofits, government, or an advocacy organization.
Passion for supporting entrepreneurship and the mission of making commerce better for everyone.
Ability to genuinely connect with strategic policy stakeholders to engage them and encourage them to research and write on key policy areas for Shopify.
Understanding of policy areas important to Shopify, including entrepreneurship, platform regulation, intellectual property, data protection, content moderation, competition, and ecommerce regulation.
Comfort working with engineers, product managers, tax specialists, and a variety of other teams as part of your efforts to understand how policy proposals may affect our business, and the merchants that use our platform.
Existing relationships with third-party tech policy organizations is a plus.
Excellent communication and writing skills in English and French or German. Additional EU languages are a plus
The ability to build and maintain strong relationships with a variety of people and teams, both internal and external. You will need to be able to gain the trust of a wide range of folks at Shopify, to speak to each team “in their language,” and to make them feel comfortable enough to reach out when things go wrong. You will also need to build trusted relationships with key external stakeholders. You will need to do all of this in a new “Digital by Design” (read, remote) workplace.
- Success at Shopify requires intellect, humility and a sense of humor. You need to take the work seriously, but not take yourself too seriously. You also need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable, able to work with many different types of personalities, really connect with people and earn their trust, and enjoy working as a team player. You will handle complicated matters with empathy and professionalism, striking a balance between legal and policy requirements while maintaining our amazing workplace.
Kostas, our Head of EU Government Affairs, is looking forward to reading your cover letter.
We know that applying to a new role takes a lot of work and we truly value your time.
