About the role

The Search and Discovery team focuses on building intuitive browse and search experiences to help buyers find and discover highly relevant products. We are opinionated, collaborative, curious, inclusive, driven, and fully remote with team members across North America.

The ideal candidate is a UX Manager with search experience who is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with complex, interconnected problems. You can effectively balance product strategy and people leadership, working closely with your team members to improve their craft skills and to help them develop professionally. You build trust-based relationships across disciplines and leverage diverse perspectives to deeply understand and improve how your team ships high impact work.


  • Providing UX leadership across the definition, design, launch, and maintenance stages of experiences leveraging product metadata and controlled vocabularies

  • Helping to define our search and discovery UX principles and strategy

  • Identifying the right problems to solve and championing research, prototyping, and iterative shipping as part of the process

  • Working closely with product, data science, and engineering teams to ship high quality, scalable products

  • Coaching and leading people across UX disciplines

  • Helping to build out the UX discipline within the Search and Discovery team, while connecting to the rich UX community across Shopify


  • A track record of creating thoughtful, user-centered search and browse UX as a creative product leader 
  • Experience leading a team in a multidisciplinary UX environment. Ours includes product and content designers, with a strong emphasis on information architecture/taxonomy

  • Passion for solving product problems while balancing all facets of a user experience (strategy and research, information architecture, interaction design)

  • Expert knowledge of the end-to-end iterative product design process, including how to develop and use personas, job stories, journey mapping, content modelling, wireframing and prototyping, user testing, and high fidelity visuals

  • Excellent cross-functional communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to help your team and stakeholders understand the impact of your team’s work, both short and long term.
