There’s a lot to say for what people have on their desk. What you have on or in your desk will often say a lot about what type of worker you happen to be. Some of the items on this list are designed for those one-time scenarios, whereas others will keep you company throughout every day of your career.
1. An Office Jacket
An office jacket is an essential item to have for two reasons. First of all, it will come in handy during those winter months where you don’t want to wear that annoying suit jacket all day. Secondly, it’s perfect for those business casual meetings with the rest of the team. It’s an ideal backup for when you’ve spilled your lunch over yourself.
Finally, an office jacket will become particularly valued when the office erupts into a battle over whether to have the AC on or not.
2. Some Extra Grooming Items
It may seem nuts to have extra grooming items hidden inside your desk. Do you really need a comb and some face scrub under there.
Some people might think that this is a little too much, but if a client is dropping by the office or you all decide to go out for drinks after work, it can be a good idea to brush up on your appearance. 55% of your first impression is formed based on appearance. Even the slightest changes to your appearance can make you feel like a whole new person.
It’s the easiest way to get that professional look in minutes.
Pack your desk with some non-perishable items. Your coworkers may look at you and believe that you are preparing for a natural disaster, but they’ll be all gathering around your desk when the boss makes you work through your lunch hour in order to meet that deadline.
Food is a way to keep you energized in between meal times. Furthermore, eating little snacks like this throughout the day can help you to force down your appetite. That will prevent any binge eating later, and more importantly keep you from putting on those extra pounds.
4. The Signature Formal Item
The majority of companies have realized the benefits of not enforcing an ultra-formal dress code at all times in the office. Like most offices, the chances are you have a business casual office. But sometimes you’ll need to change that at short notice. You’ll need that signature formal item ready and waiting.
This can be anything from a pair of high heels to a tie. It doesn’t have to be anything more than that.
Sometimes you just need to get down to business and block out everything else. Distractions can easily get in the way and cause problems. With a pair of noise-cancelling headphones, you can block out the rest of the world and get down to the real world.
It may be one of the more anti-social ways of getting work done, but sometimes you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.
Take note, you should always choose headphones over earphones. Not only are headphones safer and provide a better quality of sound, but they also act like a big warning sign for people not to disturb you.
6. Phone Charger
These days everyone is connected with their phones at all times. This is all well and good, but if you don’t have a charger you’re going to be thrown out into the wilderness. You could just borrow the charger of someone else in the office, but this will soon become irritating and there’s no guarantee that someone will be able to throw a charger at you right away.
Bring along a portable phone charger and keep it in your desk. That way when you have to leave the office to run errands you can always have it with you.
These seven items will ensure that you are ready for anything the office world throws at you. What do you think is the most important item on this list?
