Why Successful Startups Stumble

Your chances are 1 in 500...

Those are the odds you'll grow your business to $100 million in sales. Scaling rapidly and profitably is rare despite all of the millionaire success stories that litter entrepreneurial trade publications.

The Real Reason Why Millennials' Buying Behavior Is Difficult to Influence

The Real Reason Why Millennials' Buying Behavior Is Difficult to Influence

Hint: We've been sold to our entire lives...

Hey there,

It's Tommy Walker, editor of the Shopify Plus blog here.

When I read reports like "How to Market to Millennials" that make sweeping generalizations like "Millennials aren't brand loyal" or "Millennials only shop when there's a discount, so use discounts often." I can't help but chuckle. As Millennial and a marketer, it feels sooo off base...

Reports like that make me laugh because, I only use Tide detergent, and Hefty trashbags and I've never had the patience to clip coupons or wait for sales.

No, the real reason why I don't buy stuff is because A.) I don't need it or B.) They never gave me a reason to care.

That's why I was so happy when Dan Virgillito proposed the idea about talking about Millennial buying behavior, but looking at it from a "Millennial-first" perspective.

He opens with a story about the reasons why Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a big part of our generational DNA, came to be. The reason is fairly simple and as a marketer it's a great success story.

But as a Millennial, and a huge Ninja Turtles fan... it's a little... well, take a look and decide for yourself how you feel.

Anyways, this piece brings a great deal of much needed perspective to the "Marketing to Millennials" conversation, and if we're in your primary market, you should really take a look.

This is a perspective no study will offer.

Overhauling Your Customer Acquisition Model: How to Spend Your Budget Where It Really Counts

 Overhauling Your Customer Acquisition Model

Remember the good ol’ days when crafting a customer acquisition model was like a reliable recipe?

A user-friendly site, a dash of customer service, shoot your customers a few emails, pepper in some advertisements, and …

Voila!

If you find that your acquisition strategy is falling flat, it's probably time to nix, reallocate, retool, or even double-down ...

You Have 1/20th of a Second: Does Your Site Gain Trust in Time?

What does it mean to trust a website?

What if "trust" - as we know it - can be manufactured and cultivated by turning our own cognitive biases against us?

For the past month, we've examined from a high level how people view and navigate websites - where they look first, second and third - to help you subtly build more trust and credibility into those areas we're predisposed to scan, look, and fixate on.

    To recap, we've published:

The goal of these pieces hasn't been just to show you where people are looking when they visit your site, but also how to refine each of the areas the eye naturally travels in those critical first seconds to establish credibility for visitors to feel more comfortable buying from you.

In this piece, author and TEDx speaker, Dan Virgillito, dives further into the research to give even more insight into overcoming the trust hurdle and establishing the confidence visitors need to trust you with their credit card and personal information.
