The 'Life Story' focuses on determining trends in a potential employees life experience. In this lesson learn how to understand a candidate's experience without relying on the question, "Tell me a time when..."

[MUSIC PLAYING] So how do we discover these characteristics in other people? Lesson 3, The Life Story. The secret to never having to ask the question, tell me a time when, again. This is the first step in all of our interview processes across the board. And the life story is all about determining trends in someone's life experience. The reason we say life experience instead of just work experience is that people can have significant impact in projects outside of work.
Many of our employees were hired because of the past impact through side projects, volunteer work, or interests rather than in work experience only. Don't get me wrong. We dig deep into every candidate's work experience as well. But we care about other things outside of that. We're hiring the whole person-- the work experience, a family, with interests and failures. Instead of asking, tell me a time when, work your way through in chronological order a candidate's experience.
Digging into themes and looking for their past impact engagement. Let them drive some of the discussion so that you don't enter territory that they don't want to talk about. But if you're genuinely curious, you're going to learn a lot more than through the question, tell me a time when. [MUSIC PLAYING]
