# What interviews to expect

Shopify’s hiring process is designed to make sure you’re right for Shopify, right now. Here’s an overview of our typical interview program so you know what to expect.

The number and type of interviews you’ll be invited will depend on the role you’re applying for.

Life Story

Once we’re confident about your craft expertise, we want to understand how your individual experience holds up to Shopify’s values.

The Life Story interview is about understanding the themes of your career journey so far, what you have learned, and how you made a difference. We’re interested in the trophies and the bruises: the problems you solved, the challenges you encountered, the decisions you made, and the lessons you learned. The best way to prepare for the Life Story is to spend time reflecting on all the experiences and decisions that brought you to where you are today.

If you’re applying for a manager role, you’ll have a Management Life Story to dive into your management experience. We’ll present you with a few topics of conversation. You’ll be expected to talk through concrete and relatable examples from your experience.

We’re going to be honest with you. Working at Shopify can be really hard depending on your individual mindset and personality. For the right people, working here is exhilarating and leads to unlimited growth and impact.

You need to be comfortable working in an ambiguous environment and be able to sustain high performance at an unrelenting pace.

Our interview process is designed to help you decide if Shopify is an environment where you’ll do your best work. If you realize it’s not, chat to your recruiter. We’ll respect your decision if you decide to opt out.
