Air Dancers.ca is an outdoor marketing company website where we manufacture and sell outdoor advertising flags, signs, banners and our main product, Air Dancers. Or as they are also known, wacky wavy inflatable arm flailing tube men.
We've been in the outdoor advertising business for nearly 15 years renting and installing giant rooftop balloons. Some time after the Family Guy episode where 'Al Harrington' sells his Wacky Wavy inflatable arm flailing tube men from his emporium, we got requests to supply a similar product. After buying and reselling low quality Chinese imported dancers, we decided to manufacture and sell our own much higher quality Air Dancer and offer it online starting in 2012.
How did you earn your first sales? Which channels are now generating the most traffic and sales for you?
The first sale of our in house manufactured Air Dancer was to an existing customer. A large fitness company who still uses that same Air Dancer constructed all that time ago.
Being such a specialized product and one of very few in the market, we get most traffic and new sales from generic searches online looking for Air Dancers.
Tell us about the back-end of your business. What tools and apps do you use to run your store? How do you handle shipping and fulfillment?
Once an order is placed on the website, we custom construct each and every unit by hand in about a day. We use apps like Product Upsell and Product Discount to sweeten the deal for many buyers.
We also have many repeat customers. Each order that goes out includes a discount code for returning customers.
The next app we are going to utilize will be a wholesale or customer pricing app. As the manufacturer, we have many sign shops and entrepreneurs looking to resell our high quality products. We will offer a great discount for resellers. Shipping is very easy too as orders are organized so neatly. Once fulfilled, the order is archived and there is no guessing what needs to be sent out.
What are your top recommendations for new ecommerce entrepreneurs?
New store owners who aren't using Shopify yet are seriously missing out. We sold our products using a different shopping cart system for about a year before finding Shopify. Once we made the switch, it was like night and day. We went from making 1 - 2 sales a month to 1 -2 sales a day! During the busy spring/summer months we have trouble keeping up with demand and I think it has a lot to do with Shopify. The look is so professional and the back end is very user friendly.
