I always loved collecting coins. They are a part of our history, and each piece is unique and tells its own story. In my 20's I started buying and trading on a very small scale, and later in life, I started investing more heavily.
Over 20 years ago I knew enough about numismatics to start my own eBay store, and now we have 2 eBay stores, Shopify, and a physical location in La Marque, Texas. This hobby grew from something I enjoyed personally to a business shared between family, friends, and a loyal customer base.
How did you earn your first sales? Which channels are now generating the most traffic and sales for you?
My very first sales were person to person, then eBay. eBay is still our biggest seller with our largest customer base, but we would like to be more independent of them with Shopify so we can offer customers lower prices without the fees.
Tell us about the back-end of your business. What tools and apps do you use to run your store? How do you handle shipping and fulfillment?
We have a standard POS system, and we primarily work through Paypal to handle purchases. Through Shopify, we've discovered lots of handy apps to help us with email, inventory, and marketing. Facebook is a big platform that we use to connect to people, and the Facebook store app through Shopify was a great touch.
What are your top recommendations for new ecommerce entrepreneurs?
Find a great name, settle on a look, and stick with it. Reach out and find ways to connect with new people locally and through social media. Find out the best demographic audience to match your products and target them so you don't waste time on people who won't want your products or services. And most importantly, if you love your work and what you are selling, your customers will too.
