Better Off Spread is the brainchild of Jenny & Jonny, a couple from Brooklyn with a dream of channeling their crazy ideas into a spreadable empire. Jenny got her start in NYC over a decade ago at a West Village cafe making peanut butter. After many years in the ad world, she's getting back to her nut-grinding roots. Jonny worked at his family's Italian food store on Long Island since he was a teen, until moving to Brooklyn and becoming a barber.
Our initial goal was to make our spreads using the best ingredients we can find. We decided we wanted to use organic, dry roasted, GMO-free nuts for all of our products, because we want to provide our customers with a rad flavor experience without sacrificing quality or deliciousness. Sourcing wasn't and still isn't easy, but we try to seek out smaller, family run businesses when we can and focus on keeping everything made in the USA.
How did you earn your first sales? Which channels are now generating the most traffic and sales for you?
Knocking on doors. We pitched to stores that we frequented and thought our product would be a good fit for and just basically popped by with a few sample jars and a big smile. There was a big learning curve at first but we took every experience in stride and did our best to learn from them. Now we're getting picked up by more retailers all the time!
Most of our sales come from our wholesale accounts, but our online sales have been steadily increasing and go crazy around the holidays or when we receive a good press write up.
