Deal Man

Deal Man was born out in a tiny Cambridge bedroom out of frustration with being employed at a gas station and trying to pay off a humongous student loan. Initially Deal Man sold a menagerie of apparel, car parts and gadgets.

Once traffic started heading to Deal Man it was apparent that menswear was overwhelmingly our most popular range so we quickly shifted focus to menswear. Early on we spent a lot of time networking with potential customers and fulfilling custom orders until we managed to stumble upon a range of popular items and used them to propel sales.

How did you earn your first sales? Which channels are now generating the most traffic and sales for you?

Our primary means of generating sales is via Social Media (in particular Facebook). Early on this was a vital means of driving much needed traffic to the store and generating an initial customer base.

Facebook remains our main traffic source to this day and we've used it to generate almost $4 Million (USD) in sales since August 2013.

Tell us about the back-end of your business. What tools and apps do you use to run your store? How do you handle shipping and fulfillment?

Our store uses stock themes with a currency converter add on to make the site more user friendly internationally. To build sales early on we were big users of Advocado.

We've experimented with a variety of add ons but the best we have found so far is Apptive, which we use to generate dozens of sales each day. PropelAd has also been very handy when it comes to retargeting our users. As Shopify grows we're keeping an eye out for innovative tools that will get us ahead.

What are your top recommendations for new ecommerce entrepreneurs?

First and foremost, create a functional and aesthetically pleasing store. I've personally mentored some other businesses who have yet to add a domain name to their store, creating major trust issues amongst their traffic.

Depending on your target market and product range, it's important to have plenty of relevant products. In menswear I've found that there are popular sellers which generate plenty of income, but most of our profit comes from the variety of other products that people purchase alongside the big sellers.

I can't stress enough the value of social media marketing - Pinterest is creating a wealth of opportunities for new businesses and has a valuable growing community.
