In July 2012, Joshua Adam Brueckner found himself unemployed and short of change to buy new interview clothing, so he turned to his closet and got creative.
It wasn't long before he mastered the craft of tailoring wide neckties. Fed-up with the unforgiving job market, Brueckner trusted his gut, scrapped the interview schedule and began marketing SKINNYFATTIES to the world.
SKINNYFATTIES is the first and only one-stop tie tailoring shop online. Their focus on quality and craftsmanship can be seen in every tie tailored and made, which all happens in Brooklyn, New York USA and have been featured in publications such as Men's Journal and Details Magazine.
How did you earn your first sales? Which channels are now generating the most traffic and sales for you?
When SKINNYFATTIES first started (In my bedroom), I used social media to gain awareness of fashion bloggers, which led to bigger press outlets. Now, two years later (and two offices later), the main source of sales are word-of-mouth and press. Taking advantage of the valuable and free resources social media offers is crucial to any startups success
Tell us about the back-end of your business. What tools and apps do you use to run your store? How do you handle shipping and fulfillment?
We love exploring new apps that are highly functional and save us time (which we all know is money). For instance, Remove The Background app is incredible. For pennies, we submit our necktie images taken by a standard smartphone and they take the background out, giving us highly professional product shots that land us sales.
The Bulk Discount app by Shopify EASILY doubled our sales. Yotpo Product Reviews let's our customers share their experience, which builds trust in potential customers. Lastly, our favorite app, Shipstation let's you manage the shipping process for multiple orders saving you so much time, money, and headache - we've explored others and Shipstation is by far the best. SKINNYFATTIES would not be making such waves without the amazing integration of Shopify apps.
