[MUSIC PLAYING] TIM FERRISS: I learned a few things. I didn't learn a few, I learned a lot of things. But number one is, you don't always have to have a long term plan. So my short term plan and this is still true for me today-- I mean my entire life is basically six month projects and two week experiments. 10 year plan no idea. And so I don't think people should have a sense of despair if they don't know their single life's purpose in their 10 and 20 year plan.
I think that you can still be and feel successful by improvising well and taking the opportunities that are most attractive. The reason I bring that up is that it was supposed to be four weeks in London and everything up to that point had been so regimented down to the 30 minute increment and outlook at the time that I wanted to try more freewheeling, improvising.
And as a result I went to London and I realized that I could in fact take myself out of a lot of the decision making for the company, automate certain things, delegate other things, eliminate the vast majority. And it seemed plausible that I could while I was in Europe bounce around and visit a few places I'd never been to before. But I decided not to set my own schedule and I just asked people where I should go.
And if I got the same answer within a short period of time, which I did. So people say you should go to Ireland. Where in Ireland? Dublin. So I went to Dublin. Then I went to Dublin hung out there and asked them where I should go and they said, "well, I don't know what the hell you're doing in Dublin. It's the arts festival in Galway on the other coast. You should go to Galway." So got on a bus and went to Galway. And I did that for 18 months.
Just kept on going. [MUSIC PLAYING]
