I've been working in e-commerce for many years. In 2012, I co-founded Blue Thumb, an online marketplace for artists to sell their artwork which we grew to become Australia's largest art marketplace.
When we started out, like many new businesses, we spent most of our efforts and money on channels like social and search just looking for new customers. Our repeat customer strategy was just blasting an email newsletter when we had time. We quickly realized our buyers have very different tastes, and sending bulk email to our customers was ineffective and annoying.
We learned the hard way that sending a customer an artwork they hate is a quick way to lose a customer. We needed to send tailored emails to our customers at the right point in their buying journey using the data we had from them, like what artwork they'd clicked on or added to cart or bought. And our dumb blast didn't cut it, neither did segments. We needed personalized email automated at scale.
So we built it and our data-driven automated emails became our most valuable customer retention channel, which has now driven millions of repeat artwork purchases. So we turned that system into its own app and SmartMail was born. Now, SmartMail has thousands of merchants making sales for their stores through email. But you can get tremendous value from this course no matter what email service you use.
