ID verification is best suited to high-compliance industries, like selling wine online, where regulatory requirements demand a verified identity rather than just a plausible one. Database checks
Database checks use the name, address, and date of birth a customer enters at checkout to verify their age—there’s no upload, redirect, or extra step. The limitation here is that accuracy depends on the quality of the identity data infrastructure in a given market.
In the US, where commercial identity databases and public records data are relatively robust, database checks typically return a pass-fail result within seconds, without requiring customers to upload ID or complete a separate account registration. In markets with less developed databases, match rates drop and more customers end up being flagged for manual review or secondary verification.

Facial age estimation
Facial age estimation uses artificial intelligence (AI) to estimate a customer’s age from a photo of their face—typically without storing any identity data, only a pass-or-fail result, though data retention practices may vary by provider. Because face recognition is a probabilistic process, it can work better as a threshold filter (clearly over 18, clearly under 18) than as a precise confirmation.
It serves businesses that need to demonstrate they’ve taken reasonable steps to screen out minors, especially in markets like the UK where “highly effective age assurance” methods, like facial age estimation, are explicitly recognized as compliant under the Online Safety Act. It’s less suitable where regulations require confirmed age verification rather than an estimate.
Credit card verification
Credit card verification infers age from the cardholder record. If the card is linked to an adult’s account, the customer likely meets the minimum age. The catch here is that it confirms the cardholder’s age, but not necessarily the person actually placing the order. For example, a teenager using a parent’s card might pass. For this reason, this method is unlikely to satisfy regulatory scrutiny for the most strictly regulated goods, such as nicotine products, alcohol, gambling services, and legal cannabis.
Digital ID wallets
Digital ID wallets let customers present a verified digital credential from a national identity system, sharing only a pass-or-fail result (such as “over 18”) without handing over personal data like their exact age. It’s a privacy-preserving form of confirmed verification, but it’s still emerging and only available in jurisdictions where there are established government-approved digital identity programs.
The approach is gaining ground: Countries including Estonia and Singapore already run national digital identity systems, and in July 2025 the EU released a blueprint—built on the same framework as the forthcoming EU Digital Identity Wallet—to support the Digital Services Act’s rules on protecting minors online.
Self-declaration
