FAQ
How we hire
We hire people, not resumes. Our hiring process is designed to learn more about you, your mindset, and the impact you can have at Shopify.
Below you will learn more about our hiring process. The order and number of interviews may vary depending on the role and team you are applying for.
1. Apply
Select 1–2 roles that you believe are the best fit for yourself and your career. Don’t forget to check the requirements before you submit, as each role may have different ones.
2. Initial call
Depending on the role, we may set up a 15–30 minute phone or virtual conversation with a recruiter or hiring manager, where you can ask questions and tell us what you’re interested in. Get the intel on who you’ll meet and technical exercises. We’ll also use this information to help explore other roles that may be a better fit. For R&D applicants, you'll pass this step and go directly into pair programming before heading to The Life Story; a member of the Talent Acquisition team will share all the details!
3. Craft Assessment
A 60-75 minute interview. As part of your interview process, you will be interviewed by at least one person within your craft to dive into what you are best at. This is an opportunity for us to learn how you approach your craft and for you and your interviewer to nerd out together.
As part of this step, you'll also take a brief predictive assessment to help us learn more about how you approach problems, think critically, and notice the details.
4. The Life Story
A 30-60 minute conversation-style interview with a recruiter. The Life Story interview is about understanding the themes of your career journey so far, what you have learnt, and how you made a difference. We’re interested in the trophies and the bruises: the problems you solved, the challenges you encountered, the decisions you made, and the lessons you learned. The best way to prepare for the Life Story interview is to spend time reflecting on all the experiences that brought you to where you are today: the hits and misses, the pivotal points, your proudest moments, and the hardest projects. Then, be ready to settle into a genuine, two-sided conversation.
5. Meet the team
You’ll meet with 3–5 future co-workers for up to an hour each. Depending on the role, we may ask how you’d solve a problem and communicate it to the team.
6. Decision
Your hiring team will take the time to meet before getting back to you. This will be made based on feedback from Shopify team members of varying levels of seniority, experiences, and perspectives.
Can I apply for more than one job?
Yes. Please limit to 2 applications within a 30-day period. During the process, your recruiter will also help you explore the best options for you.
Who can I turn to if I have questions throughout the interview process?
Our recruiters and coordinators will be supporting you throughout the process. Feel free to ask them questions about what to expect, who you will meet, and more.
How long is the hiring process typically?
Timelines will vary depending on the role and number of applicants.
What should I wear to my interview?
Come as you are. Maybe you think best in a three-piece suit; maybe you have a favorite t-shirt and jeans combo—we're happy as long as you’re comfortable.
I have applied/interviewed in the past and wasn’t selected. Can I apply again?
Absolutely. If re-applying for the same role, we encourage you to first gain additional experience. For engineering roles, we ask that you wait 6–12 months before applying again.
When can I expect to hear back after I have applied?
Due to the large volume of applications we get every day, we can only follow up with candidates we would like to move forward with in the interview process.
What if I need an accommodation for the interview?
No problem. If you're selected for an interview and need any accommodations, please let your recruiter know.
How does onboarding work?
We've revamped our onboarding process so information gathering, team communication, and workflows happen as smoothly as possible.
Everything of value that you receive and experience at Shopify makes up your total rewards. That includes benefits, perks, and learning and growth opportunities. It also includes a world-class compensation system that's first-of-its-kind.
Under the old industry structure, there was no one place to go to understand exactly how much you earned. You’d find base salary on your pay stub and your equity in another, made even more complicated by vesting schedules, stock-market unpredictability and bonuses tied to company performance. Trying to figure out how much you’d actually take home in a year was a pain. Our Flex Comp system lays everything out simply in a one-stop shop.
The Shopify Flex Comp system allows you to:
- Choose your own balance of total reward between cash (base salary) and equity (RSUs and options).
- Change your balance throughout the year as your priorities do. (Maybe you’re buying a house, or planning for long-term investment, or want a change for no reason at all — we don’t need to know!)
- Increase your compensation as your positive impact on Shopify’s mission grows.
Shopify has always been a company of curious, talented, and innovative people who believe in making meaningful change in the world. We also believe in making sure you’re rewarded for your contribution to making commerce better for everyone.
