Getting access to a merchant’s store is a fundamental step for starting any Shopify client project.
In the past, you’ve likely had to convince clients to manually add you as staff on their stores, before being able to work. Depending on their subscription plan, their staff account limit might have made it difficult for them to do this. From there, it was up to you to keep track of the login details for all the stores you were working on at one time.
We want to make that process easier for you, your team, and your clients. Today, we’re proud to introduce Collaborator Accounts — a simpler and safer way for you to request access to, and work on, your clients’ Shopify stores.
How to access client stores with Collaborator Accounts
Gone are the days of having to get your clients to add you as staff, in order to work on their stores. With Collaborator Accounts, you can now simply request access to their store right from your Partner Dashboard.
Here’s how it works:
- Go to “Store accounts” within your Partner Dashboard.
- Select “Request store account” and enter the URL of your client’s store.
- In the Permissions section, choose the areas of the store you need to access.
- Select “Send request” to request access from the merchant. You can also include a message to the merchant.
From there, your client will be notified about your request via email, as well as within their Shopify Home. Once your client accepts the request, you’ll be able to log into their store — and any of your other clients’ stores — from the new “Store accounts” section in your dashboard, with a single click.

While Collaborator Accounts are great for you and your team, they also offer a cleaner and safer experience for your clients, as they can control what store sections you can access. Additionally, these Collaborator Accounts will not count towards their store’s staff limit.
