We're Canada's premiere online shopping destination for Hammocks.
We've been through a lot since 2001 (could write pages, and pages, and pages about our journey) but long story short, after trying all sorts of ecommerce platforms, we've settled on Shopify, which has allowed us (we're a 2 person company) to automate things to the point where we are free to travel the world and work from anywhere, digital nomad style. I am currently working from Chiang Mai, Thailand, and in future plan to visit & work from all those destinations I've always dreamed of visiting.
What are the key factors that have helped your store be successful?
The key for us has been solid customer service, which has lead to steady & stable organic growth over the years. We now have our own recognized brand, which people associate with quality. Our business took a major turn for the better when we decided to source our own products. The platform (Shopify) is also key, as a small 2-person business we got to a point where we had a decision to make. Our options were a) keep our own space (we were renting a warehouse & office space) and hire staff or b) leverage Shopify to automate key process' like shipping. We chose b, which has allowed us to live the life of our dreams- working from anywhere in the world. My business partner works from Ottawa and regularly holidays with his family, no longer stressing about having to find someone to cover for him while he is away... he spends a few minutes a day fulfilling orders in minutes with a few clicks. I myself am able to travel and work.. so far I have worked from Shanghai China, Bali Indonesia and now Chiang Mai Thailand. I am living my dreams thanks to our business.
What are your top recommendations for new store owners?
Persistence. Don't let the naysayers bring you down. Also, avoid analysis paralysis... with all the advice out there, it's easy to over-analyze but only by trying something yourself will you discover what works & doesn't.
Any Closing Remarks?
These days I get up with a smile on my face. Everyday here in Chiang Mai is bright and sunny. There have been hard times, but our persistence has led to a solid business (and brand) which allows me to travel the world while working while actually saving money.. most days I have to pinch myself.
