On Thursday, April 9, we hosted a Shopify + Dribbble Meetup in our Toronto office. We opened our doors to nearly 200 designers for drinks, discussions, and a design challenge. 

Dribbble co-founders Dan Cederholm and Rich Thornett made the journey north to join in! They assured us that Salem, Mass. (where they'd come from) was just as cold and drizzly. More than a dozen of Shopify's designers came out for the evening, proud to show off the creative environment they get to work in every day.

Announcing the Winners of Shopify & Dribbble’s Design Competition!

When we launched our playoff with Dribbble last month, we asked designers to share what design means to them.

The end result was 238 rebounds from vastly different perspectives. Our entrants played around with type, icons and illustrations. Some graphics were self-explanatory. Some required a detailed explanation. All showed the passion designers have for what they do.

It was a difficult task, but our judges evaluated each entry based on multiple factors: how well it answered our prompt; creativity and originality; demonstration of technical skill; and popular vote. Our judging panel included Dribbble’s co-founder Dan Cederholm, Shopify’s Director of Design Verne Ho, and Shopify’s Director of Product Design Greg Beldam.

Without further ado, let’s announce the grand prize winner, followed by our two runner-ups and 10 honourable mentions.

When Shopify’s Build-A-Business Competition first launched in 2010, the idea was simple. If we wanted to prove how easy it was to launch an online store on Shopify, why not host a contest to see how quickly a business could go from Shopify startup to success story?

Now that we’re a few years in – with the number of participants and total GMV generated doubling or even tripling each year – we realized there was an important piece of the puzzle we were leaving out.

Behind many of these winning shops were Shopify Partners and Experts who had helped breathe life into their online stores. Without that help, perhaps our winners would never have won at all.

So, this time around, we created a whole new prize category. Each Shopify Partner who helped build one of the winning shops would receive $10,000 in Apple Gift Cards to put towards their business.
