Comfort-performance socks maker Bombas was founded in 2013 with a mission. Socks are the number one most requested item in homeless shelters. That’s why, for every pair of socks purchased, Bombas donates another pair to those in need.
After landing a deal on Shark Tank and watching their on-premise site crash not once but twice, Bombas made the move to Shopify Plus. Since then, they’ve…
- Donated five million pairs of socks
- Run countless pop-up shops through Shopify’s POS
- Sold $17.2 million the year after migration
- Grown revenue as much as 300% year over year
The word Bombas is derived from the Latin word for bumblebee. Bees work together as a hive to make their world a better place. We really like that idea.David HeathCo-founder of Bombas
A great product, meaningful cause, and high-profile media attention catapulted Bombas to success — growing from $300,000 in revenue in 2013 to $4.7 million in 2015.
Unfortunately, what should have been their brightest moment turned into one of the darkest. When Bombas’ founders David and Andrew Heath landed a deal with Shark Tank’s Daymond John, their Magento-backed online store fell apart. Not just once, but a second time when the episode reran.
Product images were broken, customers couldn’t check out, and losses totaled $15,000 in just a few minutes.
Updating the site to manage the jump from 500 transactions a day to 4,000 would be time-intensive and cost about $150,000. On top of that, Bombas began paying thousands of dollars each month in server maintenance fees to stave off future crashes.
With more new shoppers coming to the site every day, Bombas needed a solution that would provide reliable, flawless customer experiences and continue to scale alongside their business.

Bombas turned to Shopify Plus to provide high-quality customer experiences and support the company’s long-term growth. Instead of worrying about their website, they wanted to focus on their product and mission.
With Shopify Plus, scaling is seamless. Bombas can perform mass product uploads quickly, using a backend system that’s clean and easy to operate.
Whether we’re doing 500 or 5,000 orders a day, Shopify Plus automatically scales with us, without us having to do anything extra. Stability is key, and it’s better to be up all of the time, and that’s the peace of mind Shopify brings us.David HeathCo-Founder of Bombas
In addition, Shopify’s POS allowed Bombas launch a pop-up shop in NYC — connecting the digital and physical sides of their business — and their Merchant Success Manager, Neal, doesn’t just answer questions but guides them into the latest innovations, capabilities, and functions.

The switch to Shopify Plus saved Bombas an estimated six figures in their first year alone. Even with data migration and replatforming costs, they saw ROI positive almost immediately.
Shopify Plus has also enabled Bombas to expand its business. Since migrating, growth has surged. The result is more innovative offerings for their customers, more socks donated to those in need, $17.2 million in sales last year alone, and 300% year-over-year growth.
We’re going to save $108,000 a year by switching to Shopify Plus. Eventually, it’ll all fall to the bottom line, but we’re projecting to be ROI positive in year number one, even with the data migration and replatforming costs.David HeathCo-Founder of Bombas
