There are several ways to migrate from your current POS system to Shopify POS.
Migration apps: Choose from a variety of free and paid migration apps available through the Shopify App Store.
CSV migration: Transfer your store’s data using a .csv file. We recommend this option for businesses who are more comfortable with spreadsheets and manual data entry.
Shopify Experts: Browse the Experts Marketplace for trusted POS migration agencies that can assist with complex migrations and offer personalized onboarding.
Whichever option you choose, you’ll have 24/7 access to Shopify Support.
Importing your data to Shopify can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on the complexity of your business and the migration method you choose.
We’ll be honest—migrations take time, but the process doesn’t have to be painful. You can set yourself up for success by setting aside time to archive old data before you begin the import and check over your transferred data once everything is in Shopify.
There are a variety of free and paid apps for seamlessly migrating your data to Shopify.
If you have a large product catalogue or want to import past order data and analytics, you can browse the Experts Marketplace to connect with trusted agencies and freelancers who specialize in complex POS migrations. Shopify Experts set their own rates for various levels of service.
Absolutely. You can explore the Shopify Experts Marketplace for trusted agencies and freelancers that specialize in POS migrations. In fact, we recommend working with an expert if you have a particularly complex migration or would like a more personalized onboarding experience.
Your data is safe. Any Shopify apps or experts you use to migrate will not delete your data from your previous system and you can revoke an app’s access to your data at any time by uninstalling it. Your current POS system may also have additional fields on products and customers that are not supported on Shopify. Visit the Shopify Help Center to learn more about additional details you can add to products and customers.
To make the transition as smooth as possible, we recommend keeping at least one register from your old POS system available for the duration of your return policy, so you can still process returns or exchanges. This will also give staff a chance to get comfortable with Shopify POS.
If you do choose to maintain 2 POS systems for a period of time, be sure to update your inventory in Shopify to reflect any transactions made on your old system.
For payment hardware, we recommend using Shopify card readers for fully integrated payments in Shopify POS. For hardware accessories like receipt printers, cash drawers, barcode scanners, and more you can check to see if your current hardware is compatible with Shopify POS or shop approved devices on the Shopify Hardware Store.
If you have existing barcode labels on your products, you can use apps to migrate your barcode data or manually add them to your products in Shopify. You can also start fresh and create new barcode labels for your products once they’re in Shopify.
We recommend using Shopify’s built-in payments provider: Shopify Payments*. Shopify Payments is included with all Shopify plans and offers low rates and quick payouts for sales both in-person and online. To view current rates, visit our pricing page.
If you wish to continue using your current payments provider, you can maintain your external terminal and reconcile payments manually in Shopify POS.
* Note that Shopify Payments for POS is only available for approved industries in the continental US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, and the Netherlands. For prohibited industries outside of these countries, you may use Shopify POS with a third-party payments processor.
