In the early days of Instagram, posts appeared in users’ feeds in chronological order. If you posted at the right time, your photo could be the first thing your followers saw when they opened the app.
Today, the Instagram algorithm determines which posts show up when, and Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri has said that post timing “doesn’t matter much.” But he did admit that posting right before your followers are most active could give you a small boost, which could be worth it if you’re trying to maximize your reach on the app.
This guide contains 2026 data on the best times to post on Instagram, broken down by day of the week, content format, and industry. It also covers how to find the best times to post for your individual account.

The best time to post on Instagram
In general, the best time to post on Instagram for maximum engagement is at 7 a.m., according to Social Pilot’s analysis of seven million Instagram posts from 50,000 accounts between February 2025 and January 30, 2026.
However, the exact best time to post on Instagram depends on your particular audience and their time zones.
How to find the best time to post on Instagram for your audience
- See when your followers are most active
- Track engagement and conversions
- Look at competitors’ Instagram strategies
Here are three different ways to find the best time to post on Instagram for your specific audience:
See when your followers are most active
Adam Mosseri recommends posting right before your follower activity peaks. “That way you can make sure that your content is available and also fresh before the most followers you have show up,” he says in an Instagram video.
You can see when your following is most active by using Instagram Insights, a built-in analytics tool that displays information on audience demographics and how your content performs. Anyone with a public account can access Instagram Insights, but you need a professional account and at least 100 followers to see follower data including when users are most active.
To switch to a professional account, open the Instagram app and navigate to Settings and Activity. Under Your Insights and Tools, select Account Type and Tools. Under Account Type, select Switch to Professional Account.
Note that switching to a professional account will make your posts visible to search engines, which is a good thing if you want to use social media to market your small business. (If you don’t want your posts to show up in search engines, you can change your preferences in Settings and Activity, under Who Can See Your Content > Account Privacy.)

Once you have a professional Instagram account, you can see when your followers are most active by navigating to Settings and Activity. Under For Professionals, select Insights. Under Overview, select either Total Followers or New Followers and scroll down to Follower Active Times. You can select the time period you want to analyze, such as the past week or past 90 days, and then see active times by day of the week.

Track engagement and conversions
You can also use Instagram Insights to see whether posting at certain times yields higher engagement.
Navigate to your Professional Dashboard. Under Insights, select Content You Shared. You can then filter by content type and time period and sort by views, accounts reached, follows, or shares.

Instagram Insights won’t show you the relationship between posting time and engagement, but you can use the data from Insights to conduct your own analysis. Experiment with different posting times (you can schedule posts using Instagram’s built-in scheduling tool to make this easier), then check Insights for engagement patterns.
In addition to in-app engagement, you can look at spikes in traffic or conversions on your ecommerce site to see whether posting time influences how much you sell on Instagram. If you’re on Shopify, you can use Shopify Analytics to track the Instagram sales channel.
Look at competitors’ Instagram strategies
Identify Instagram accounts with a similar audience to yours, then examine when they post.
Below each post, you’ll see how many hours ago it was published or on what day it was published. Note that you won’t be able to see the exact time for posts that were published before the current day. To make sure you don’t miss anything, you can set up notifications for when the account posts.
You can organize and analyze what you learn yourself, or use a social media management tool to analyze your competitors’ Instagram posts.

Best Time to Post on Instagram FAQ
Does posting time affect how many people see my Instagram post?
Posting time gives only a modest boost to reach, since Instagram's algorithm weighs overall engagement more heavily than the exact minute you publish. Posting shortly before your followers are typically active helps your content stay fresh when they open the app, increasing the odds of quick likes and comments that signal relevance to the algorithm. Content quality and consistency still matter more than hitting a specific time down to the minute.
How often should you post on Instagram for the best results?
Posting three to five feed posts a week, plus one or two Stories daily, tends to give strong reach without overwhelming your audience, based on an analysis of millions of Instagram posts. Regular posting builds a predictable rhythm that keeps your account active in the algorithm's eyes between big pushes. Pair a steady cadence with your personalized best times to get the most out of each post.
Does my audience's time zone change the best time to post?
Yes — the best time to post on Instagram depends on where your followers live, since engagement peaks follow local morning, lunch, and evening scroll habits. If most of your audience is concentrated in one region, plan around that time zone. Accounts with followers spread across multiple regions can check Instagram Insights to see which region makes up the largest share of their following and prioritize that time zone first.
How quickly does early engagement affect my Instagram reach?
Early engagement in the first few hours after publishing plays a large role in how widely a post gets distributed, since Instagram's algorithm reads quick likes, comments, and shares as a signal the content is worth showing to more people. Posting when your followers are already scrolling raises the odds of those early interactions. That's why timing a post shortly before peak follower activity can help, even though it's not the only factor driving reach.
What if my account doesn't have enough followers to see Insights data?
Accounts under 100 followers can't yet see follower active-time data in Instagram Insights, since that feature requires a professional account with at least 100 followers. Until you hit that threshold, use general benchmarks, like the 7 a.m. overall peak time or the posting windows for your industry, as a starting point. Once you cross 100 followers, switch to your own Follower Active Times data for a more personalized schedule.
