Offer distinct buyer and merchant apps

To date, the Mailchimp app has only been merchant-facing whereas Shopify has distinct apps for merchants and buyers. Shopify is designed to serve as an all-in-one platform for both sides of the ecommerce experience, compared to Mailchimp, which was built specifically as an add-on email marketing tool for businesses.

Complete purchases in-app

For merchants who are using Shopify’s own payment gateway, Shopify Payments, all purchases made through Shopify sites can be completed in the app, without relying on a third-party integration. Because Shopify Payments is native to the Shopify platform, it features lower fees, faster speeds, simpler integration, and centralized reporting. Mailchimp, on the other hand, doesn’t have its own first-party payment platform, so all purchases are done through a third-party app.

Beyond Shopify Payments, Shopify has over 100 third-party payment gateways to choose from, offering merchants a huge variety of payment options.

Take in-person payment directly

Shopify’s first-party POS system similarly means that in-person sales can also be completed directly through the app. If you’re hosting a pop-up or using Shopify for your brick-and-mortar location, you can take payment and process transactions through Shopify on a desktop or mobile device. To create a full retail experience, you can upgrade your store to the Shopify plan and connect your Shopify POS app to other retail hardware, like a barcode scanner or cash drawer. Since Mailchimp doesn’t have its own POS system, in-person transactions have to be taken through a third-party terminal.

Build a blog and optimize for SEO

Shopify’s website builder includes tools to help you build and launch a blog and optimize your entire site for SEO, increasing your store’s visibility online and directing more buyers to your site. Shopify’s SEO tools include things like Google Search Console, which lets you check your page rankings, Screaming Frog, which crawls your pages for errors, and Ubersuggest, which helps you identify longtail keyword opportunities. In addition to its own blog tool, Shopify Blog, Shopify offers best-in-class blog and page building add-ons, like WordPress, Shogun, and DropInBlog.

Unfortunately, Mailchimp’s website builder doesn’t currently include blog or SEO tools from Mailchimp directly.

Email unlimited contacts

Shopify’s pricing structure guarantees that as your email database grows, your costs don’t. Shopify pricing is based on the number of emails you send versus the number of contacts you have, compared to Mailchimp, which charges you proportionally to the size of your database. In this way, Shopify encourages you to grow your email list as much as possible without penalizing you for an expanding audience. You can then determine who is most valuable to contact at any given time.

Embed campaigns and products in emails

Shopify makes it easy to promote specific products or campaigns by email. Using Shopify email templates, you can embed holiday promos, sales, or even new product landing pages directly into an email so recipients can easily click through to the appropriate page and make a purchase. Since Mailchimp has never previously had its own ecommerce product, this isn’t currently an option in Mailchimp emails.

Shopify and Mailchimp have different pricing models, which can make a direct cost comparison challenging, but sending a large volume of emails is far more affordable through Shopify. With Shopify, the first 2,500 emails are free, and beyond that you pay $1 per 1,000 emails, which keeps email costs low as you scale. Mailchimp plans are based on a number of factors, including how many emails you plan to send each month, which causes Mailchimp emails to become more expensive faster. For example, if you wanted to send 40,000 emails, you would pay about half as much to use Shopify over Mailchimp.
