The latest figures on the top online shopping categories rank fashion as the most popular category of all internet purchases. Of the total ecommerce expenditure worldwide in 2022, consumers are forecast to spend $1.01 trillion on electronics.
That’s around 24.3 percent of the expected ecommerce revenue worldwide in 2022, which stands at $4.15 trillion. Simply put, nearly one in every four dollars spent by consumers online this year is spent on electronics.
That represents a significant portion of global ecommerce sales and a five percent year-over-year increase in online electronics purchases. However, it’s a relatively slow growth rate compared to the 12 percent increase from 2020 to 2021 and the 20.8 percent increase from 2019 to 2020.
The second-most popular online shopping category is fashion. Just under $1 trillion is expected to be spent on these products. Together with electronics, expenditure in these two ecommerce categories is forecast to hit $2 trillion in 2022.
Toys, hobby, and DIY is the third-most popular online shopping category in 2022 and sales are expected at $570 billion. Even furniture is proving to be a popular product to sell online. $500 billion is forecast to be spent on them online this year.
Top Online Shopping Categories in the US
Focusing on the top ecommerce categories in the US, fashion ranks first. US consumers are expected to spend $205 billion on fashion-related products this year, which makes up 22.6 percent of the expected total ecommerce revenue in the US in 2022.
As with the global figures, this is also one of the slowest growth rates for fashion-related sales. At 13.6 percent, the 2022 year-over-year growth rate is significantly lower than the 24.7 percent growth rate in 2020 and the 25.2 percent growth rate in 2019.
Expenditure on fashion-related products in the US, however, continues to rise. Total revenue from these products is forecast at $232.1 billion in 2023 and $262.3 billion in 2024.
Unlike the rankings of top online shopping categories worldwide, electronics is the second most popular category among US online shoppers. Revenue from this category in 2022 is expected to reach $171.5 billion.
